Three Generations: A Film

Description

This exercise uses the 2020 film Minari to explore Berry’s Model of acculturation. Students watch the film, then answer five multiple-choice questions identifying which acculturation strategy (Assimilation, Integration, Separation, Marginalization) best fits each main character.

Methodological Guide

Objectives

Identify the four strategies of Berry’s Model of acculturation; apply the model to characters in a real-world cinematic context; recognise acculturative stress and cultural identity in migrant families; reflect on the interplay between cultural preservation and adaptation.

Exercise Procedure

Complete the quiz individually after watching the film. Select one answer per question, then click Check Answers to see which are correct (green) and which are incorrect (red). Use Try Again to correct any wrong answers and recheck.

Theoretical Basis

Berry’s Model of Acculturation (Assimilation, Integration, Separation, Marginalization); acculturative stress theory; cultural identity and intergenerational migration research.

Practical Application

Analyse how Korean-American immigrant characters in Minari navigate identity and belonging. Connect Berry’s theoretical categories to observable character behaviours and family dynamics depicted in the film.

Assessment / Evaluation

Ability to correctly map Berry’s four acculturation strategies to specific characters and situations; critical reflection on how isolation, cultural pride, and adaptation interact within an immigrant family.
