Mind and Culture: Connect the Ideas
Authors: Assoc. Prof. Paloma Moral de Calatrava
20-30 minutes
Description
Test your knowledge of mental health in a multicultural society by selecting the correct term assignment for each concept pair.
Methodological Guide
Objectives
Check personal progress about the theory of Mental Health in a Multicultural Society and explore key concepts in depth.
Expected Outcomes
Participants correctly identify key multicultural mental health terms and their contextual usage.
Exercise Procedure
Students review 10 concept pairs from multicultural mental health theory. For each pair, they select the option that correctly assigns both terms to the corresponding sentence blanks. Immediate feedback is given after checking answers.
Mode of Implementation
Individual self-assessment exercise; suitable as a warm-up or recap activity in training on multicultural mental health.
Role of the Teacher
The teacher can use this exercise to assess prior knowledge, introduce new concepts, or facilitate group discussion after completion.
Theoretical Basis
Mental health concepts such as acculturation, migration, cultural identity, and acculturative stress are shaped by cultural and societal factors. This exercise draws on Berry's acculturation model, the Ulysses Syndrome, the Concordance Model of Acculturation, and WHO/APA frameworks.
Practical Application
Healthcare professionals apply knowledge of multicultural mental health concepts to better understand immigrant and refugee patient experiences.
Knowledge Transfer
Understanding cultural and social determinants of mental health improves clinical assessment, care planning, and communication with diverse patient populations.
Reinforcement & Reflection
After completing the exercise, participants reflect on how cultural context shapes the definition and perception of mental health norms.
Required Resources
Device with internet access; exercise platform.
Assessment / Evaluation
Correct assignment of all 10 term pairs.
Practical Tips
Encourage participants to read the REFLECT explanations after each incorrect attempt to deepen understanding of each concept.
Discussion Topics
How do acculturation strategies affect mental health outcomes? What role does language play in immigrant mental health? How can healthcare professionals better support multicultural patients?
Further Resources
Berry's acculturation model; Acculturative Stress literature; DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview; Ulysses Syndrome (Achotegui, 2002).
